Indian Army is said to be the largest branch of armed forces in India which take responsibility for military operations. Apart from attractive pays, army offers best lifestyle even better than other corporate professions. Finest clubs, golf clubs, free medical facilities, adventure, sports, loans for house or vehicle, insurance are some of the ample opportunities army provides.
Recruitment or Career in Defense Services
Combined Defense services or the Armed Forces have three main streams- Army, Navy and Air force. Each of these have different branches which are trained in combat and defense. Students aspiring to join the defense services are well trained, recruited and introduced to their chosen branch for serving the nation.
Recruitment in Armed forces are mainly through the Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) exam for Commissioned Officers. For other entries like Technical branches, NCC special entry, Women special entry scheme and service entries are made directly through respective recruiting directorates from Armed forces.
Recruitment through UPSC
National Defense Academy(NDA) examination is conducted by UPSC every year in the months of April and September for Army, Navy and Air Force admissions. Candidates on completion of 10 plus 2 exams or while in 12th standard are eligible to compete in this examination. Successful students thereafter can join NDA. After completion of course in NDA, they are sent to respective academies for their training.
Recruitment through Selection Boards
Recruitment through service selection boards or Air Force selection board made for the following branches in different streams are:
Army: All arms and services
Navy: Engineering(naval architects), logistics, Electrical engineering, Education, Law, Air traffic control.
Air Force: Aeronautical Engineering( Electronics and mechanical), Education, Administration, Logistics, Accounts and Meteorology.
10+2 entry Scheme
Students who completes plus two exams can opt for engineering course in the Army or Navy through Technical entry scheme, which helps him to become an engineer at Army expense before promoted as an officer. UPSC exam is not required for this entry.
University Entry Scheme
Engineering graduates can join without any written examination in pre final or final year through the University Entry Scheme by appearing before the selection board. Students gets seniority of two years and directly commissioned as a captain.
Short Service Commission Entry Scheme
Qualified graduates can be recruited through the combined defense services examination as regular or short service commissioned officer. Training to these officers is carried out at Indian Military Academy in Dehradun which is known as cradle of Military leadership. Students who are willing to join the short service commission are trained at Officers Training Academy(OTA) in Chennai for five years. After completion, he can opt for an extension for another five years or resign or a permanent commission.
Women special entry Scheme
Women’s entry has been very popular and competitive at graduate, postgraduate and engineering graduate levels. A woman officer can serve up to fourteen years after being trained at Chennai OTA and have performed well in all streams. Recruitment for women for different branches include:
Army: Engineers, Army Education Corps, EME Signals, Army Ordnance Corps, Army Service Corps, Intelligence and Judge Advocate general's Branch.
Navy: All branches in Indian Navy
Air Force: Flying, Aeronautical Engineering(Electrical and Mechanical), Administration, Logistics, accounts and meteorology.
Recruitment through NCC
University students who possess NCC "C" Certificate with minimum of "B" grading and graduated with 50% marks are appointed in Navy and Air Force as regular and short Commissioned Officers.
Recruitment for medical officers
Students who are interested in joining the Armed forces after MBBS, may join in Armed forces Medical College(AFMC) in Pune. Admission is through an entrance examination in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Intelligence, English Language, Comprehension, Logic and reasoning. Students who are graduated from this college are directly appointed as permanent commissioned Medical officers in Army. For regular or short service commissioned officers, all India competitive exam is conducted by the Director General of Armed Forces.
The requirements for defense forces are very high and only the best are selected as there is no scope for weakness or error in this profession.
