We hear the term "Smartphone" tossed around in our daily life. But do you know what exactly is a smartphone and how it works?
Well here it is..
There is no particular definition of the term smartphone but simply termed as a device that helps in making phone calls and capable in messaging like normal cellphones but with extra features. Cellphones with added features (even computer like features) result in a smartphone.
Here are the features we look at:
Operating System: Generally, a smartphone is based on an operating system that allows it to run applications. Apple's iPhone runs the iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones run the BlackBerry OS, some other devices run Google's Android OS, HP's webOS, and Microsoft's Windows Phone.
Apps: While nearly all cell phones include some kind of software (even the most basic models these days include an address book or some sort of contact manager, for example), a smartphone have the ability to do more than we could think of. It may allow you to create and edit Microsoft Office documents or minimum view the files. It may allow you to download applications, such as personal, business or almost anything. Or it may allow you to edit photos, get driving directions via GPS, or create a playlist of digital tunes.
Web Access: Many smartphones can access the Web at higher speeds with the growth of 4G and 3G data networks, as well as the Wi-Fi support to many handsets. While not all smartphones offer high-speed Web access, they all offer some sort of access. You can use smartphone to browse your favorite sites.
QWERTY Keyboard: A smartphone includes a QWERTY keyboard which means that the keys are laid out in the same manner they would be on your computer keyboard and not in alphabetical order as on top of a numeric keypad, where you have to tap the number 1 to enter an A, B, or C. The keyboard can be hardware (physical keys that you type on) or software (on a touch screen).
Messaging: Cell phones can send and receive text messages, but what makes a smartphone unique is its handling of e-mail. A smartphone syncs with your personal and also your professional e-mail account. Some smartphones can even support multiple e-mail accounts. Some others include access to the popular instant messaging services, like AOL or Yahoo! Messenger.

- Send and receive phone calls – some smartphones with WiFi capability.
- Personal Information Management (PIM) including notes, calendar and to-do list.
- Interrelation with laptop or desktop computers
- Data synchronization with applications like Microsoft Outlook and Apple's iCal calendar programs
- E-mail
- Instant messaging
- 3D video games
- Play audio and video files in some standard formats
